Cookies Policy

This page explains what cookies are, which of them this website uses, and how you can control them from your browser. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy, which covers personal data more generally.

1. What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on the device you are browsing with. On a later page, or a later visit, the site can read it back. Cookies are used for ordinary things such as remembering a choice you made or keeping a session open — and also for counting visits, measuring behaviour and building advertising profiles.

In Portugal their use is governed by article 5 of Law no. 41/2004, as amended by Law no. 46/2012, read together with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (the GDPR). The rule is that a cookie which is not strictly necessary to deliver the page you asked for may only be used once you have been informed and have given your consent.

2. What this website uses

This is a static website: the pages are delivered as they stand. There is no user account, no basket, no contact form and no comment area, and nothing you do here is stored on our side.

Accordingly, this website does not use:

  • analytics or audience-measurement cookies;
  • advertising, retargeting or profiling cookies;
  • social-network tracking cookies, “like” buttons or share widgets that report back;
  • tracking pixels or invisible beacons;
  • embedded third-party players, maps or chat windows that would load code from another company while you read.

That is also why you are not shown a consent banner when you arrive: there is nothing here for you to consent to, and a banner asking you to accept cookies that do not exist would be misleading.

If a cookie is set at all while you are here, it will be one that is strictly necessary to deliver the pages or to keep the connection secure. Cookies of that kind are allowed without your consent under Law no. 41/2004, precisely because without them the page you asked for could not be served to you.

3. Links that take you somewhere else

Some of our pages link out to other websites — professional profiles, a map service, the accreditation and industry documents we cite, and the news articles referred to in our Highlights and News section. These are ordinary links: nothing is loaded from those sites while you are reading ours, and nothing is set on your device until you actually click through.

Once you are on someone else's website, their cookie and privacy policies apply and ours do not. We have no control over what they store, so it is worth reading their terms there.

4. How to control cookies in your browser

Every current browser lets you see which cookies are stored on your device, delete them, and refuse new ones — either for every site or site by site. The setting is normally found under Privacy:

  • Google Chrome — Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies and Delete browsing data;
  • Mozilla Firefox — Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Cookies and Site Data;
  • Microsoft Edge — Settings, then Cookies and site permissions;
  • Safari — Settings (or Preferences), then Privacy.

Menu names move between versions, so if you cannot find the option, searching your browser's own help for “cookies” will give you the current path. You can also browse this site in a private or incognito window, which discards everything when you close it.

Blocking cookies costs you nothing here, because this website does not depend on them: every page will work exactly as it does now. On other websites, blocking all cookies can stop parts of them working.
